The International Center currently serves the expatriate
students of the International Academy, a public school in Bloomfield Hills,
MI. We have helped numerous students work through the difficulties of
adjusting to a new school system, and have seen our students grow into
fully functioning students who graduate and earn the International Baccalaureate
degree.
New international students face numerous difficulties while beginning their studies in a foreign school environment. Not only is the language different, but also the entire culture of the school is new. Students have to learn everything about the school, how to behave in the class room, what the teachers expect, how to do the school work properly, and of course learn to be comfortable speaking, writing and even thinking in English.
The International Center has put in place many helpful services for the new expatriate students. These include:
- A Buddy System - New expat students are paired with students from their language group (if possible) who have been in the United States for a few years. The new student will spend the first two days with the experienced student and learn many of the subtle skills needed to transition into the school system (lockers, cafeteria, maps, schedules and so on) After two days, the new student follows his or her regular schedule, but can call on the buddy for any advice. This is an informal relationship that lasts as long as the new student needs advice and tips on his or her new school.
- International Club - This club is designed to give expats a chance to get together and have some fun. It also takes up international causes and works to educate the student population on topics of interest. The club sponsors the International Dinner Dance, in which students bring their favorite music and food from their culture and share a fun evening with all.
- English as a Second Language - This program is offered in every public school system in the United States. Any student who is not proficient in English has an opportunity to increase his or her skills through this important class.
- Specialized Grading System - Students at the International Academy who do not have high skills in English will be graded on a pass/fail basis for the first semester. This gives them time to learn English without being penalized.
The International Student Handbook - This is a publication internal to the International Academy that is given to all new expats. This booklet has helpful information and is a handy reference as students learn about American schools.
The International Center also recognizes that parents of students also need help in adjusting to the new school system. We currently offer regular meetings of the International Discussion Group, which allows parents (usually mothers) to meet and discuss issues and problems they face in their adjustment to their new life.
While it is important to make a smooth transition to American schools, it is
also important to maintain language skills in your native tongue. We offer
the "WorldPath Language and Culture Program", designed to promote language
learning in Hindi, Mandarin Chinese and Russian. German Literature for native speakers is also taught. Click on the WorldPath button for details.
